College students celebrate A Level and T Level results

A Level Results Day

Harlow College students were celebrating today with some fabulous results, improving significantly on last year with a 98% pass rate, with 55% of all our A Level students gaining A*-C grades overall.

And our A Level students have gained places at some of the country’s top universities including Oxford, Bath, Queen Mary’s, Aberystwyth, Goldsmiths, UCL, Loughborough and Nottingham to study subjects such as Astrophysics, Fine Art, Biochemistry, Law, Psychology, Mathematics and Computing.

Students on vocational courses or other technical courses such as BTECs, UAL etc. achieved an overall pass rate of 96% with 71% of students gaining Distinction*, Distinction or Merit grades, an 11% improvement on last year’s higher grades results. These great results allow our students to progress directly to university or to take up apprenticeships as the route to combine their studies with employment.

Our T Levels students in Early Years and Construction and the Built Environment have also achieved great success with a 96% pass rate, 83% of those students gaining Distinction or Merits grades - a 9% improvement on last year! T Levels are a new technical qualification which follow GCSEs and are equivalent to three A Levels. They combine classroom theory, practical learning and an industry placement with an employer to make sure students have real experience of the workplace.

Becky Jones, Vice-Principal of Harlow College, said: “These are really fantastic results for all of our students. There is no such thing as an easy course. Every Level 3 programme has its own unique challenges and hurdles to overcome or understand, in order to be successful. These results show our students are working harder than ever to get the grades they need to move on their next destinations, work, Apprenticeship or University, with many students also having to balance working many hours alongside studying. A huge well done to all our graduating students this year!”

Sotirios Adamopoulos, Head of Sixth Form, said: “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to our students on their recent exam results. What an incredible achievement! Their hard work and dedication have truly paid off. I know for sure the countless hours of studying and preparation that went into achieving such fantastic results and I have no doubt that our students will continue to make us proud as they will continue to excel in all their future endeavours.

“This is also the moment to recognise the contribution of teachers and FE staff in guiding and assisting students in that wonderful journey of learning.”

Newly elected Harlow MP, Chris Vince, was equally enthusiastic. “I would like to join with Harlow College in congratulating their students on today’s results. I know that they are down not only to the hard work of the students themselves but also the teachers and support staff. I wish all of Harlow College students the best of luck for their future endeavours.”

Among the students who achieved excellent results were:

Leah Ford, 17 – A Level Student

Chemistry A*, Mathematics A, Biology A

Going to Oxford University to study Biochemistry

I was really shocked when I found out my results – I was not expecting to get those grades! I’m going to Oxford to study biochemistry as I’ve always wanted to do forensic science and a biochemistry degree opens so many doors. I’m so glad I chose to study my A Levels at Harlow College, the teachers here really prepared me for university. Once I graduate I want to do forensics and lab work.

Patrycja Kus, 18 – A Level student

Sociology A*, Psychology B, English Literature B

Going to UCL to study Psychology

I was so happy when I got my grades, I was definitely not expecting an A*. My teachers really helped me and encouraged me to work harder. I can’t wait for the whole uni experience. I’m moving into UCL accommodation and am really looking forward to meeting new people and learning at a higher level. I will decide on my career path after I have done my research project.

Shay Carey, 19 – A Level student

Economics A, Politics B, Mathematics C

Going to The University of Nottingham to study Finance, Management and Accounting

I previously studied A Levels at my local sixth form but didn’t do as well as would have liked, so I applied to Harlow College to re-sit my exams, which was a much better experience. It was a much more relaxed atmosphere and the teachers were so supportive. I can’t wait to get started at university and would like to pursue a career in banking and finance when I graduate.

Jack Woods, 18 – T Level Early Years student

Distinction

I really enjoyed studying a T Level. I spent lots of time at college but also lots of time at a nursery and a primary school, gaining loads of experience, so it was just perfect. T Levels definitely get you ready to go straight into work. I did 600 hours in a local primary school and 500 hours in a nursery, so I really feel work ready. I’m planning to go to university once I’ve got more experience under my belt. Ultimately, I want to get my teaching degree and be a primary school teacher.
