About the course

Everything can be explained using physics. From the formation of stars and galaxies, to the behaviour of atoms, and even how guitar amplifiers work, all involve an understanding of physics.

This course will give you a thorough understanding on how the principles of physics can be used to describe the world around us, using both a theoretical and experimental approach. As mathematics is the language of physics, emphasis will be placed on developing mathematical models that can be used to not only explain the physics but provide verification of experimental results.

Entry requirements

Average score of 5 or above from 7 GCSEs including Maths, English and Science.

Average score of 7 or above in Maths.

Average score of 7 or above in Science.

How much does it cost?

Why study?

By studying physics, you will gain a deeper understanding of the world around you and develop your problem-solving skills that can be easily transferred to other areas of study. Furthermore, your skills in data analysis will be enhanced by using software such as MS Excel, whilst also developing your communication skills by learning how to logically and concisely present ideas and solutions.

Where will this course take me?

The majority of Physics students progress on to higher education, with the option of studying a range of physics-based subjects (particle physics, theoretical physics, or astrophysics, for example) and can be combined with a mathematics-based degree.

Possible careers:

  • Physicist
  • Engineering (all disciplines)
  • Astronomer
  • Medical physicist
  • Teaching

Physics is seen as one of the most important facilitating subjects for studying at university.

Many employers prefer physics students due to their highly developed analytical skills.

Students with a BSc in physics earn approximately 14% more than those without.

Core modules

A wide range of content is covered in both the first and second year of the course. The main units include:

- Mechanics

- Electrical circuits

- Materials

- Waves, oscillations, and optics

- Quantum theory

- Electromagnetism

- Particle and nuclear physics

- Thermodynamics

- Gravitational fields and forces

- Space and astronomy

How will I be assessed?

Continuous assessment throughout the year via written examinations and laboratory reports.

There are formal examinations at the end of both the first and second year. There are two examinations in the first year and three examinations in the second year.

You will also have to complete a set number of experimental investigations throughout the two years.

Will I have to provide anything?

Students will need the course textbook for both the first and second year:

Edexcel A level Physics Student Book 2 + ActiveBook (Edexcel GCE Science 2015): Amazon.co.uk: Hudson, Miles: 9781447991199: Books

All laboratory equipment and PPE will be provided.
