About the course

This is the first step in your career in one of the most exciting careers available. Led by a team of former journalists, this programme is designed to introduce learners to the fast-paced environment of print, broadcast and online journalism. You will learn how to improve your writing style, how to conduct interviews, what job roles are available, and how to improve your chances of getting your first foot in the door of this very competitive industry.

Entry requirements

Diploma – 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including grade 4 in English Language or Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media at Pass or above.

Extended Diploma – 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including grade 4 or above in English Language, or Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media at Merit or above.

How much does it cost?

Courses are free to 16-18 year olds. Reduced fees may be available for 19+ learners.

Why study?

This course offers a combination of practical and theory-based work-related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities, and demands. You will also undertake work experience and develop the skills you need to start your career. The course is made up of a selection of units ranging from interview techniques, writing copy, broadcasting skills, and page layout and design. Successful completion of this course will allow you to achieve a qualification equivalent to three A Levels.

Where will this course take me?

Careers such as Journalism, publishing, film and TV production, marketing and public relations. higher education in subjects such as Media or Journalism.

This course is an ideal stepping-stone on to the NCTJ course, currently offered at University Centre Harlow. This is an essential qualification for all aspiring journalists. The course will also prepare you for a career in the digital, marketing, and social media industries.

Core modules

There are 13 units of study within the Extended and 8 units on the Diploma culminating in a final major project.

How will I be assessed?

All assessment is by coursework. There are no exams.

Will I have to provide anything?

For journalism classes you will need a reporter’s notebook, memory stick for use on PCs and Macs.
