About the course

Learn how to create, shoot, and edit your own video and audio content, write articles and reports for print, TV and radio and explore what can be achieved using a variety of different mediums.

Your projects will coincide with many of the key events in the sporting calendar and you will be expected to research and produce content on a range of different sports on a variety of levels. 

Each year students will complete a final major project. This project will be chosen by you and you will enjoy a large amount of freedom to create a project that you are passionate about. The grade you receive for this project will determine the final grade for your qualification. 

Classes are taught though face-to-face in a classroom setting in one of our PC or Mac suites. You will have access to TV and video editing equipment, cameras, social media hardware, the greenscreen studio and radio suite. You will receive 1-2-1 tutorials to help nurture and develop your work. The projects will consist of a mix of independent and group work.

Entry requirements

Diploma – 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including grade 4 in Maths or in English Language or Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media at Pass or above.

Extended Diploma – successful completion of Diploma in Year 1

Applicants will be invited to interview where they will meet the course tutor.

How much does it cost?

Courses are free to 16-18 year olds. Reduced fees may be available for 19+ learners.

Why study?

This course has been created by industry professionals to help you gain experience in the field of sports journalism.

Whilst on this course you will be required to produce written, video, and audio content on a range of sporting activities. Our modules have been designed to work alongside some of the major events and competitions in the sporting calendar.

By doing this we are able to expose studenst to real-world situations, taking on projects designed to replicate real-world scenarios, working to realistic deadlines and under work-like conditions in one of our dedicated newsrooms, the radio suite or TV studio.

The course has not only been designed to increase students’ employability, but it will also allow them to collect a portfolio of work coving a range of different mediums. This will, in turn help them to secure a place at university, on an NCTJ course or locate a job following graduation.

So, if your passion is sport, and you like the idea of becoming a journalist, working for one of the major sports news outlets, then this is the course for you. Students who complete this course can expect to graduate onto university, the UAL level 4 course in Business Enterprise, or the NCTJ Diploma in news or magazine journalism.

The course consists of 13 core modules.

How will I be assessed?

All assessment is by coursework. There are no exams.
