About the course

This one-year qualification is designed to equip you with the knowledge and understanding of babies and young children from birth to six years old, with a focus on applied knowledge for early years, specifically from 0 to 4 years.

The course content aligns with the Department for Education's (DfE) Level 2 criteria, ensuring it meets the requirements for a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner in the workforce.

The course is structured over one year, with one morning per week spent in college and a minimum of 16 hours in an Early Years setting. During the course, you will study topics such as:

  • The roles and responsibilities of an Early Years Practitioner
  • Health and safety for babies and young children in the early years
  • Promoting equality, diversity, and inclusive practices in Early Years settings

To successfully complete this qualification, you must be employed, volunteering, or undertaking a practical placement in a real work environment (RWE), allowing you to demonstrate both knowledge and skill competency.

A good level of English and maths is recommended. If you wish to improve your skills in these areas, you may have the opportunity to take a Functional Skills course alongside this qualification.

Entry requirements

You must be at least 19 years of age with a good understanding of written and spoken English.

Minimum 16 hours a week volunteering or working in an Early Years setting i.e Nursery, pre-school or reception class

Who is it suitable for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 19+ who would like to work with children up to the age of 6 years old. No prior experience is necessary however you should be volunteering in an early years setting for approximately 16 hours per week in a supervised assisting role.

Where will this course take me?

Learners may be able to progress to the NCFE/CACHE Level 3 Diploma Early Years Educator, or alternatively progress onto an Apprenticeship. If wanting to move into working as a Level 2 Practitioner in a nursery, preschool or primary school.

How will I be assessed?

The Diploma is assessed by a designated expert assessor who will carry out task observations and visit you at work. You will be required to produce a diploma portfolio recording all tasks completed which will be assessed. Other assessment methods include: Reflective accounts of work practice, oral questioning, work products.

Will I have to provide anything?

You will need to provide stationery, folder, A4 lined paper, plastic sleeves and dividers. Recommended reading: Your tutor will inform you of this.
