An additional half day may be required for apprentices working towards English & Maths achievement.

Entry Requirements

English & Maths GCSE Grade 3 and above or
English & Maths Functional Skills Level 1

If you have not yet met the entry requirements above, additional support & guidance are available.

Where apprentices have not already achieved Level 2 English and Maths, they must do so before taking the end-point assessment

Occupation Summary

This occupation is prevalent across all areas of the Further Education and Skills Sector (FES), primarily in settings for students aged 16 and above, though some teachers may work with 14- to 16-year-olds in alternative provisions. Most Further Education, Learning and Skills Teachers are employed in FE colleges (both general and specialist), independent training providers (ITPs), Adult Community Learning (ACL) providers, or offender learning settings, with a few serving as trainers in large organisations. Teaching encompasses a range of levels, typically up to Level 3, including academic, vocational, and technical education, with some teachers delivering subjects up to postgraduate level across various sectors. Many Learning and Skills Teachers are dual professionals, leveraging their technical, vocational, and academic expertise to enhance the learning experience. The broad purpose of this role is to ensure students acquire the knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary for success. Learning and Skills Teachers achieve this by planning and delivering relevant, comprehensive, and challenging lessons that inspire student engagement and foster progression.

Course Overview

The apprenticeship standard outlines the essential Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours required for effective teaching practice.

Key knowledge areas include understanding pedagogical theory, supporting English and Maths development, designing inclusive curricula, and implementing evidence-informed teaching strategies. Apprentices will learn to create adaptable learning resources, engage diverse learners, and assess progress through ongoing assessments while fostering a safe learning environment.

Skills focus on integrating research into teaching, minimising learning barriers, contextualising subjects, and using varied assessment methods.

Additionally, apprentices will be trained to provide effective feedback, encourage learner autonomy, and comply with safeguarding procedures. Important behaviours include resilience, commitment to continuous professional development, professionalism, and ethical conduct, all while promoting sustainable practices and maintaining positive relationships within the educational environment.

End Point Assessment

The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.

The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:

  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Observation of practice in normal workplace
  • Professional discussion with an independent assessor

Progression Opportunities

The skills, knowledge, and experience gained through this apprenticeship can lead to a career as a lecturer or teacher in either the public or private sector.

You can progress to achieve Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. QTLS is a recognised professional status in the education sector, attained after successfully completing a six-month professional formation and maintained through membership in the Society for Education and Training.
