About the course

This course is designed to help you understand how to work safely when carrying out routine maintenance activities on Electric/Hybrid vehicles.

Ideal for those working in the automotive industry or anyone who may encounter electric/hybrid vehicles within a routine maintenance situation as well as the knowledge and skills required to work safely around a vehicle that may have had damage to its high energy/electrical system.

This Award sized qualification offers an introduction to this specialised industry sector to compliment your current industry qualifications and experience. If you are a member of the IMI, you can use this qualification to gain IMI TechSafe™ accreditation, and therefore the ability to easily demonstrate to colleagues, customers and professionals that you’re fully qualified to be working on EV vehicles and/or vehicles with ADAS technologies.

Funding to cover the fees for this course is available from Essex County Council if you are an Automotive technician either living or working in Essex. There are a limited number of these funded spaces available until July 2024.

Who is it suitable for?

Typically this course is suited to Automotive Technicians who maintain and repair hybrid technology vehicles. The course contains the knowledge required to work safely around a vehicle's hybrid system, whilst carrying out repairs or maintenance. On completion of this ‘single unit’ qualification, you will have gained knowledge of high voltage hybrid technologies and an understanding of their dangers.

The course also provides essential knowledge and skills for members of the emergency services who may attend an accident involving a high voltage hybrid vehicle.

Core modules

The course contains one mandatory unit covering knowledge of:

  • Electric/hybrid vehicle system components and operation
  • Hazards surrounding electric/hybrid vehicles
  • How to reduce the risks to yourself and others when working on electric/hybrid vehicles
  • Safely preparing the vehicle when carrying routine maintenance (NOT high voltage components or systems)
