About the course

This qualification provides learners with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. It will enable learners to gain an understanding of elements including children and young people’s development and safeguarding their welfare. 

This qualification is ideal for those who are interested in working as a teaching assistant or a learning support assistant.

This course provides learners with the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded professionals from a variety of early years settings, exchange experiences, and share best practices.

To successfully complete this qualification, you must be employed, volunteering, or undertaking a practical placement in a real work environment (RWE) for a minimum of 16 hours per week, allowing you to demonstrate both knowledge and skill competency.

Duration

1 day per week for 18 months.

Studying at Harlow College plus work experience or volunteering in a school at least two days per week.

*The department recognises that a large number of students have care or parental responsibilities and makes allowances to ensure these demands can continue to be met by learners.

Entry requirements

English and Maths grade A-C / grade 4 and above or Level 2 Functional Skills. 

You must undertake and receive clearance for a compulsory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check for suitability for working with children and young people.

You must be employed, volunteering, or undertaking a practical placement in a real work environment (RWE) for a minimum of 16 hours per week, allowing you to demonstrate both knowledge and skill competency.

Who is it suitable for?

This course is suitable for those who are currently working in a teaching support role and would like to gain a qualification and move to the next level.
