Entry Requirements
Minimum requirement: GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4, or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 2.
64 UCAS Points or Relevant Level 3 Engineering Qualification.
Occupation Summary
Automation and Controls engineering technicians work as part of multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with various stakeholders such as design and production teams, and coordinating with both internal and external customers. They monitor automation systems either on-site or remotely, ensuring functionality by managing equipment and software. In large companies, they typically report to an engineering manager, while in smaller businesses they may have more autonomy. Their responsibilities include health, safety, and environmental protection. The related course provides essential engineering skills, focusing on problem-solving and mathematical concepts, and prepares students for further study or industry roles such as Automation and Controls Engineer
Course Overview
The apprenticeship standard covers essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for success in engineering and automation. Trainees will learn engineering mathematics, electrical and electronic circuit principles, and safety procedures for automation equipment. They will also explore technologies like programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable speed drives (VSDs), and instrumentation. Skills include maintaining a safe work environment, interpreting technical documentation, and supporting project tasks such as installation and maintenance. Apprentices will develop diagnostic capabilities for troubleshooting systems and configuring automation technologies. The programme emphasises health and safety, resilience, effective communication, ethical conduct, quality focus, and a commitment to continual learning and professional development.

- Level 4 HNC in Engineering
End Point Assessment
The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.
The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:
- Project, Report and Presentation with Questioning
- Occupational Professional Discussion
Progression Opportunities
You can use the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained to work in the Engineering industry as a fully qualified Automation and Controls Engineering Technician.
This apprenticeship provides a good foundation for further study, allowing you to progress onto a Degree Apprenticeship, Higher National Diploma (HND), or a full-time degree programme.
