If you don't yet have an employer you can still apply for an apprenticeship while you continue to look. We can offer you advice on how to successfully secure an apprenticeship with an employer.

Education and Early Years

Duration

Practical period - 18 months (this does not include EPA period).

Average EPA preparation period – 1 month.

Study Mode

Day release (1 day per week).

An additional half day may be required for apprentices working towards English & Maths achievement.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirement: GCSE English and Maths at Grade 3, or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 1.

Apprentices who have not already achieved Level 2 in English and Maths must do so before taking the End-Point Assessment.

Occupation Summary

This occupation is found in a range of maintained and private, voluntary, and independent settings such as full day care, children's centres, pre-schools, reception classes, playgroups, nursery schools, home based provision, hospitals, social care settings, out of school environments, and local authority provision.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to provide high quality early education and care to children. Through an evidence-based approach, they provide opportunities and learning experiences for all children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Early years educators follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements set by government for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to 5 in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Course Overview

This apprenticeship equips early years educators with essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours to support children’s growth and development.

Knowledge covers safeguarding, health and safety regulations, equality, diversity, child development from birth to age 7, and creating inclusive indoor and outdoor environments that promote learning.

Skills include managing risks, supporting children’s emotional and social development, fostering positive relationships with families and colleagues, planning child-centred learning experiences, and applying reflective practice for ongoing improvement.

Behaviours emphasise empathy, professionalism, creativity, and a strong commitment to continuous professional development (CPD), preparing apprentices for effective and impactful roles in early years settings.

Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Paediatric First Aid

End Point Assessment

The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.

The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:

  • Observation of Practice: This takes place in a normal workplace setting and lasts for 60 minutes.
  • Professional Discussion: This is a 45-minute discussion led by an independent assessor, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

You can apply your knowledge, skills, and experience to begin a career in early childhood education. Potential roles include:

  • Early Years Educator
  • Early Years Worker
  • Childminder Assistant
  • Nursery Worker
  • Nursery Nurse

After completing a Level 3 (advanced) apprenticeship, you can apply to university. Many universities accept Level 3 apprenticeships, though specific entry requirements may vary. Examples of further study include teacher training.
