Entry Requirements
Minimum requirement: GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4, or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 2.
64 UCAS Points or Relevant Level 3 Engineering Qualification.
Occupation Summary
Lead maintenance engineering technicians typically perform a multi-disciplinary role, managing or leading other technicians. They may specialise in areas such as mechanical, electronic, or electrical engineering. Employers range from small to large businesses that provide or require maintenance support, including major asset owners, operators, supply chain entities, contractors, and sub-contractors. Typical workplaces encompass both private and public sector manufacturing factories. The course covers the fundamental engineering concepts and skills required of a higher technician while also providing a solid foundation for further study at degree level. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving skills, and students should expect the delivery to reflect this, along with associated mathematical concepts.
Course Overview
The apprenticeship standard covers essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours in mechanical engineering. Knowledge areas include engineering mathematics, mechanical components, safety standards, manufacturing processes, automation systems, fluid mechanics, and maintenance. Skills focus on safe working practices, technical drawing, project management, machine operation, problem-solving, and automation programming. Key behaviours emphasise a commitment to safety and quality, teamwork, professionalism, continuous learning, and upholding high ethical standards and responsibility in engineering roles.

- BTEC Level 4 HNC in Engineering
End Point Assessment
The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.
The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:
- Project, Report and Presentation with Questioning
- Professional Discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
Progression Opportunities
You can use the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained to work in the Engineering industry as a fully qualified Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician.
This apprenticeship provides a good foundation for further study, allowing you to progress onto a Degree Apprenticeship, Higher National Diploma (HND), or a full-time degree programme.
