Duration
Practical period - 48 months (this does not include EPA period).
Average EPA preparation period – 3 months.
Study Mode
Day release (1 day per week).
An additional half day may be required for apprentices working towards English & Maths achievement.
Entry Requirements
Minimum requirement: GCSE English and Maths at Grade 3, or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 1.
Apprentices who have not already achieved Level 2 in English and Maths must do so before taking the End-Point Assessment.

Occupation Summary
This Apprenticeship is found in the building services sector of the construction industry.
Plumbing & domestic heating technicians’ size and select, plan and install, service, maintain and commission plumbing and domestic heating systems.
All technicians will be required to work on typical plumbing elements such as hot and cold-water systems and storage, supplies to dwellings and associated pipework, above-ground pipework, connection to below-ground, sanitary pipework, fittings and furniture. Appliances and equipment can include central heating boilers, bathroom furniture, sanitary appliances, drainage and rainwater systems.
Course Overview
This apprenticeship standard equips candidates with essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours for the plumbing and domestic heating industry.
Candidates will gain an understanding of health and safety legislation, plumbing installation and testing techniques, and the relevant mechanical principles. They will learn to navigate the legislative requirements for plumbing and low-pressure natural gas systems, including installation, servicing, and commissioning.
Skills training focuses on safe working practices, effective fault diagnosis, and the planning and selection of systems tailored to customer needs.
Additionally, apprentices will develop professional behaviours, emphasising ethical conduct and a commitment to continuous professional development and industry best practices.
Mandatory Qualification:
Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating
End Point Assessment
The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.
The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:
- Knowledge Test - This comprises multiple-choice questions, the CC1 theory test for domestic gas safety, and the CENWAT theory test for heating systems.
- Practical Planning Test
- Practical Competence Test
- Interview - Conducted by an independent assessor, based on your apprenticeship portfolio.
Progression Opportunities
You can use the knowledge, skills and experience you have gained to start working as domestic heating engineer, domestic heating installer or a plumber.
