About the course

A broad introduction to the study of art and design with the opportunity to produce experimental work in a range of subject areas – which covers painting, drawing, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, 3D design, and graphic design.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3. Portfolio of art and design work to show at interview.

How much does it cost?

Courses are free to 16-18 year olds. Reduced fees may be available for 19+ learners.

There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries and employer support.

A materials fee of approximately £75 is payable at the beginning of the year to contribute towards some of the consumable materials such as paper, paint, printing ink, clay etc. Budget £50 for your own materials. Costs (approx £75) of local visits need to be covered by students.

Why study?

In term 1 you will improve your drawing skills and experiment with a range of printmaking techniques. You will be introduced to ceramics and make a series of tiles and a tube pot.

In term 2 you will study graphics and textiles and use a range of materials in the 3D work shop. You will also make a short animation.

In term 3 you will have an opportunity to use the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in previous units to identify, research and produce a personal art and design project. You will specialise in one of the following areas: 3D/ceramics, graphics or textiles/print.

You will visitt London museums and galleries e.g. Tate Modern and British Museum and the Gibberd Gallery Harlow.

Where will this course take me?

As part of your main course of study you will explore career opportunities within the creative industries and appropriate progression routes.

Progression to Level 3 Art & Design, Graphics or Photography.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is coursework based via practical assignments, case studies and portfolio of work. At present there is no external assessment.
