About Finding an Employer

You MUST have an employer before you can start an apprenticeship. You can search for an apprenticeship job here.

If you don't yet have an employer you can still apply for an apprenticeship while you continue to look. We can offer you advice on how to successfully secure an apprenticeship with an employer.

Route

Engineering and manufacturing

Duration

Practical period - 42 months (this does not include EPA period)

Average EPA preparation period – 6 months

Alternative delivery modes may be available.

Study Mode

Day release (1 day per week)

An additional half day may be required for apprentices working towards English & Maths achievement.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirement: GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4, or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 2.

Apprentices who have not already achieved Level 2 in English and Maths must do so before taking the End-Point Assessment.

If you have not yet met the entry requirements above, additional support and guidance are available.

Occupation Summary

This role is found across industries such as aerospace, automotive, defence, logistics, pharmaceuticals, energy, and advanced manufacturing, where automated systems blend mechanical, electrical, electronic, and fluid power technologies.

The primary goal is to maintain equipment and ensure optimal performance to meet safety, quality, and cost targets. Multi-skilled mechatronics maintenance technicians handle tasks such as installation, testing, fault diagnosis, and planned maintenance of complex automated machinery. They operate across multiple disciplines, including electrical, mechanical, and control systems, while following safety standards. Technicians also document and communicate their work and may work shifts, at height, in confined spaces, or with hazardous equipment.

Course Overview

The apprenticeship standard equips mechatronics maintenance technicians with essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours. Apprentices learn to use IT tools, understand engineering problem-solving, and follow safety regulations. Key areas include engineering materials, industry standards, and technologies like electrical and mechanical systems. The programme covers risk mitigation, fault-finding, quality management, and sustainability. Skills developed include using technology for documentation, performing maintenance, and ensuring safety compliance. Professional behaviours such as promoting diversity, committing to continuous improvement, and supporting sustainable practices are emphasised, preparing technicians to manage complex tasks effectively and ethically.

Mandatory qualification:

Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering

End Point Assessment

The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.

The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:

  • Practical observation with questions
  • Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

Progression Opportunities

Upon completion, this apprenticeship provides a pathway to Higher Apprenticeships in Engineering.

After completing a Level 3 (advanced) apprenticeship, apprentices can apply to university. Many universities accept Level 3 apprenticeships, though specific entry requirements may vary.

Additional progression routes include:

  • Mechatronics Maintenance technician
  • Field Service Maintenance Technician
  • Multi-Skilled site Maintenance Technician
  • Senior Technician
  • Workshop Manager
  • Teacher or Assessor of Engineering
