Study Mode

Day release (1 day per week)/Alternative delivery modes may also be considered.

An additional half day may be required for apprentices working towards English & Maths achievement.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirement: GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4, or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 2.

Apprentices who have not already achieved Level 2 in English and Maths must do so before taking the End-Point Assessment.

Occupation Summary

This occupation is in the healthcare field, specifically dentistry. Dental nurses work in clinical settings such as NHS or private practices, hospitals, specialist clinics, community services, or military dental clinics. Their main role is to provide chairside support to dental professionals, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and infection control. Responsibilities include preparing instruments, materials, and medications, sterilising equipment, keeping records, managing stock, and ensuring patient comfort throughout their visit.

Course Overview

Dental nurse apprenticeships equip learners with the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) for their role. Apprentices will develop an understanding of professional standards, legal responsibilities, and the wider healthcare system. They will gain expertise in infection control, patient care, communication, and dental procedures. Practical skills include chairside assistance, preparing equipment, maintaining records, and supporting dental professionals during treatments. Apprentices will also learn how to handle emergencies and uphold safety and confidentiality. In terms of behaviour, they are expected to act professionally, collaborate within the team, and uphold high ethical standards, ensuring patient dignity and care.

Mandatory Qualification: Level 3 Dental Nurse (Integrated)

End Point Assessment

The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.

The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:

  • Knowledge Test: An online, multiple-choice exam.
  • Observation of Practice: A 60-minute assessment conducted in your regular workplace.
  • Interview: A 45-minute interview with an independent assessor.

After completing a Level 3 (advanced) apprenticeship, apprentices can apply to university. Many universities accept Level 3 apprenticeships, though specific entry requirements may vary.
