Day release (1 day per week)

An additional half day may be required for apprentices working towards English & Maths achievement.

Entry Requirements

English & Maths GCSE Grade 4 and above or

English & Maths Functional Skills Level 2.

If you have not yet met the entry requirements above, additional support & guidance are available.

Where apprentices have not already achieved Level 2 English and Maths, they must do so before taking the end-point assessment.

Occupation Summary

This occupation is found in a wide range of organisations, including but not exclusively, chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear companies; and analytical science services, dental laboratories and educational establishments.

The broad purpose of the occupation is working at the forefront of technology to carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing (and manufacturing where relevant) and perform a variety of technical support functions across the organisation.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with the laboratory manager and colleagues, internal departments such as manufacturing, procurement and quality, internal customers such as medical staff, teaching staff and students, external suppliers and customers such as service engineers, delivery drivers, regulatory bodies and inspection teams e.g. HSE.

Course Overview

This apprenticeship equips candidates with the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for success in scientific and laboratory environments.

Knowledge covers quality standards, data protection regulations, statistical techniques, and health and safety principles. Candidates will understand the business environment, including their roles, ethical practices, and the importance of compliance with health and safety legislation and laboratory regulations.

Skills include conducting laboratory experiments, maintaining accurate records, and effectively managing resources. Apprentices will learn to adhere to health and safety protocols, prepare documentation proficiently, and utilise statistical methods to analyse data.

Behaviours focus on effective communication, teamwork, and time management. Candidates will develop the ability to work independently, adapt to change, and commit to continuous professional development, all while maintaining integrity and confidentiality in their professional conduct.

End Point Assessment

The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.

The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:

• Knowledge Test
• Observation with Questioning
• Structured interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

You can apply your knowledge, skills, and experience to begin a career as a laboratory technician/assistant.

After completing a Level 3 (advanced) apprenticeship, you can apply to university. Many universities accept Level 3 apprenticeships, though specific entry requirements may vary.
