Entry Requirements
Minimum requirement: GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4, or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 2.
Apprentices who have not already achieved Level 2 in English and Maths must do so before taking the End-Point Assessment.

Occupation Summary
This occupation is part of the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) sector, which includes Aerospace, Automotive, Maritime Defence, Nuclear, and Construction industries. Machining Technicians produce complex, precision-machined products for machinery, such as aeroplanes and vehicles, as well as bespoke components for domestic appliances and medical equipment. They operate various machines, including centre lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, and CNC machine tools.
The main purpose of this role is to machine components from metals or specialist materials using both conventional and CNC tools. Technicians plan their activities, set up and adjust machine settings, and create and validate CNC programs. They also inspect components, report issues, and support continuous improvement, typically in a manufacturing environment.
Course Overview
The apprenticeship standard encompasses essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours for Machining Technicians. Key knowledge areas include health and safety regulations, environmental sustainability, engineering standards, and the properties of engineering materials. Trainees will learn about engineering representations, mathematical principles, and various machining processes, along with quality assurance and fault-finding techniques. Skills focus on the safe operation and adjustment of CNC and conventional machines, conducting risk assessments, managing stock, and documenting processes both electronically and on paper. Effective communication and principles of continuous improvement, such as Lean and Six Sigma, are emphasised. Desired behaviours include prioritising health and safety, acting ethically, and fostering a collaborative, inclusive work culture. The standard also highlights the importance of ongoing professional development and accountability in their roles.

- Level 3 Diploma in Machining
End Point Assessment
The Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment an apprentice must complete to successfully finish their apprenticeship.
The End Point Assessment for this standard consists of the following elements:
- Practical demonstration with questions
- Knowledge test
- Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
Progression Opportunities
Upon completion, this apprenticeship provides a pathway to Higher Apprenticeships in Engineering.
After completing a Level 3 (advanced) apprenticeship, apprentices can apply to university. Many universities accept Level 3 apprenticeships, though specific entry requirements may vary.
