    About the course

    This course is suitable for anyone interested in working in the vehicle repair/maintenance industry. It is designed to maximise opportunities for progression onto an apprenticeship programme where you can work towards becoming a fully qualified Motor Vehicle specialist.

    How much does it cost?

    Free to students aged 16-18. You will be expected to pay for stationery and textbooks. Enrichment activity e.g. Motor show, Skills shows etc. approx. £100.

    Who is it suitable for?

    This Diploma is ideal for 16-19 year olds who enjoy working with motor vehicles and who wish to develop experience in a variety of motor industry sectors at a level that suits their ability. It also supports progression to a Level 2 Diploma.

    Why study?

    This qualification is designed to engage and motivate those over 16 years of age who are interested in learning about the maintenance of motor vehicles and the various employment roles available in the retail motor industry. It can supplement progress to appropriate destinations, such as apprenticeships and employment.

    Practical Activities will be based around the following units:

    • Spark Ignition Engine Systems, Components and Operation
    • Compression Ignition Engine Systems, Components and Operation
    • Engine Liquid Cooling & Lubrication System Components and Operation
    • Steering and Suspension Systems Components and Maintenance
    • Vehicle Braking Systems Components and Maintenance
    • Vehicle Wheels and Tyres Construction and Maintenance
    • Introduction to Spark Ignition Fuel Systems
    • Spark Ignition System Maintenance
    • Vehicle Electrical Foundation Skills
    • Vehicle Lighting System Maintenance

    You will also be trained to F-Gas certification level for the maintenance of automobile air conditioning systems.

    • Motor Technician/Mechanic/MOT tester (further study required)

    Optional modules

    You will complete a range of practical activities and job cards during your timetabled work ready day. Activities on this day have been designed in line with the needs of local and national employers with the aim of ensuring that you will have the skills to get into work and sustain employment once you have secured a job.
